Intervention Using SI Theory

Sensory Processing and Integration is the process by which the brain receives, interprets, organizes and uses sensory information from his/her environment in the performance of everyday functional activities.    Beginning in the 1960’s, A. Jean Ayres, PhD., a gifted occupational therapist and scientist, systematically studied this process and developed the theory that provides the foundations for occupational therapy evaluation and intervention from this frame of reference.  This approach is called Ayres Sensory Integration.

At OTR, Inc., we strive to provide sensory integration intervention that reflects Dr. Ayres’ principles where the child takes the lead.  The child is carefully observed and evaluated to determine his/her specific sensory needs and/or deficits using specific evaluations, clinical observations, and parent inquiry by highly trained occupational therapists in sensory integration.  After synthesizing this information, a therapy plan is determined based on the child's needs.

Intervention principles used include creating an atmosphere of trust and respect within an environment that includes equipment that provides vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile sensations and opportunities for praxis.  It utilizes activities rich in these sensations while providing opportunities for integrating that information with other sensations such as vision and sound. Activities are chosen that promote affect regulation and alertness and provide the basis for attending to what is important in the moment.  Intervention strategies focus on providing the “just-right challenge” that allows the child to make adaptive responses to changing and increasingly complex environmental demands created by the therapist.  The context for the intervention is play where the child’s motivation for mastery is captured.  With each success the child is driven to achieve more.

Here at OTR, Inc. we have therapists who are trained and experienced in providing Ayres Sensory Integration evaluations and intervention.  In addition, we provide other models of intervention which incorporate principles of this theory,  and enrich the overall occupational therapy process.  This intimate understanding of SI theory and practice allows us to provide strategies, activity and environmental adaptations which enable children to develop and participate more fully and comfortably within the daily routines of childhood.
